Craven taking a stab at 'Souls'
By Jeffrey Jolson-Colburn
Horrormeister Wes Craven will lead a remake of the classic cult film "Carnival
of Souls" for Trimark Pictures.
Craven ("A Nightmare on Elm Street") will serve as executive producer for the
new take on the 1962 Herk Harvey horror film, overlooked upon its release but
winning national attention when rediscovered about six years ago. The film was
reportedly the inspiration for George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead."
"It's like a horror film would be if it was made by Ingmar Bergman," said
Trimark senior VP Phil Goldfine. "Everyone has been trying to remake it, but
Herk never agreed with anybody's vision until he met Peter Soby, who is
producing the film with Michael Meltzer and Lisa Harrison."
Harvey died April 6 at the age of 71. "Peter and Herk became friends before his
death, and Peter was given the remake rights. So Herk passed away knowing the
film was in good hands," Goldfine said.
The film will shoot in the Los Angeles area this winter.

Grossman set for Trimark 'Souls'
Trimark Pictures has signed writer-director Adam Grossman to the remake of
"Carnival of Souls," the 1962 Herk Harvey cult film (HR 4/10).
Grossman just directed the sequel to Stephen King's "Sometimes They Come Back"
for Trimark and will be reteaming with producer Michael Meltzer on the
"Carnival" project.
"Adam has been a fan of 'Carnival of Souls' since he started in this business"
said Trimark senior VP production Phil Goldfine. "There is nobody better to
bring this classic to the screen than Adam."
Harvey's low-budget horror film, filmed in Lawrence, Kan., was overlooked when
it was first released but has gained national attention since it was
rediscovered six years ago.
Executive producing "Souls" will be Wes Craven; Peter Soby, Michael Meltzer and
Lisa Harrison are producing.
