Who is Shawnee Smith?

Shawnee Smith is a television and movie actress.  She co-starred in the sitcom Becker (1998-2004), now airing in syndication.  She has also appeared in recent films The Island (2005) and SAW II (2005).

She has appeared in over 40 films, both television & theatrical, about 25 of them starring or co-starring roles to one degree or another, and co-starred in 5 television series to date, as well as making guest appearances in about 20 other television series. She also sings and writes music. Browse the music section for more information on that subject, including a few MP3 downloads.

She was born on 3 July 1970, in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She is about 5 feet 4 inches tall, has a daughter and new born son and lives in Los Angeles.

Still don't recognize her ? Look at the gallery and check out the "Not Shawnee Smith" List here if you are not certain the actress you are thinking of is Shawnee Smith.

There are a few biographies in the articles section. This should help those seeking general biographical data.

Throughout this website she is informally referred to by her first name for simplicity.

Where can I send her fan mail? Does she sign autographs?

c/o Raybin Management, LLC
15 East Putnam Avenue
Suite 450
Greenwich, CT 06830

There is other information here.

She does indeed give  autographs for those interested such items. You might try writing to one of the above addresses [source: imdb.com].

I sent a letter to the Becker production office back in 2003 and received an autographed cast photo here. I also received an email from an individual I believe was Shawnee herself expressing approval for the website shortly after this.

You may want to include a self-addressed envelope that is large enough for an autographed 8 X 10 photo and has enough return postage affixed. You might also want to include some positive comments for her in the note as well.  Be careful there are often fake "autographed" photos of her and other celebrities sold elsewhere.

What awards and commendations has she been nominated for or received?

1985, Youth in Film Award, nominated or won [?] for Exceptional Young Actress Starring in a Television Special or M.O.W. (Crime of Innocence) [emails to  their website concerning this award have gone unanswered].

Letter of Appreciation from Steven Spielberg for "Crime of Innocence" here

1985/6, Dramalogue Award for the play "To Gillian On Her 37th Birthday", [performed at the Matrix Theater, Los Angeles; she does not appear in the movie version]

1988, Youth in Film Award, nominated for Best Young Actress in a Horror or Mystery Motion Picture (The Blob) [The Blob was also nominated for Teen-Age Choice for Best Horror Motion Picture]

2000/1, Ratty Awards, nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress - Comedy Series (Becker). [as selected by rec.arts.tv internet newsgroup]

Entertainment Tonight Post Emmy Party at the Cicada Restaurant, 12 September 1999

In 1997, she appeared at Actorfest '97 [a trade show], the Cannes Film Festival and the Hollywood Christmas Parade [broadcast in November 1997 on the WB Network].

She appeared as a guest on the syndicated radio show "Loveline" [not the MTV television version] in 1998 and also on 14 May 2001.

She has appeared at the Emmy Awards annually since at least 1999 [presumably], on behalf of Becker.

She has appeared at the PRISM Awards [award for accurate depictions of alcohol and drug abuse in mass media] on behalf of Becker for these episodes:

Has she ever done a nude scene?

Interesting question. What are you really looking for ?...

Although you can see her bare back in films such as Easy Prey (1986) and an episode of Brand New Life (1989) she has not done any nude scenes to date. Never Get Outta the Boat (2002) features her one and only love/sex scene, but alas no nudity.  She has done some of those "holding her breasts" type photos in magazines such as Maxim and Steppin' Out.

I guess you can almost count an episode of "Becker" in which she wore a see-through top that was obscured by superimposed black bands across the screen (screengrabs here). Anything more explicit is beyond the scope of this site -- this is a "PG-rated" site after all. If you are seeking more explicit photographs then look elsewhere. Next question please...

What is her "Bacon Number"?

A Bacon Number is the lowest number of films which can link another actor to Kevin Bacon. The lowest Bacon Number an actress can have is 1. Of course, Kevin Bacon himself has a Bacon Number of 0 (zero).

Shawnee Smith has a Bacon Number of 2.

Shawnee Smith was in Who's Harry Crumb? (1989) which starred John Candy, who appeared in JFK (1991) featuring Kevin Bacon.

There are other variations. This site has more information:

Why create this website?

Don Gough created and maintained the original site at ozemail.com.au from 1997. In February 2002, he decided to pass the site to someone else. I raised my hand first and relaunched the site at this domain in May 2002.

I do not have any contact with Shawnee Smith personally. I simply maintain this site for enjoyment and to fulfill the niche for a website collecting detailed information on her work and to communicate this information to those interested in such details. I am not a "celebrity worshipper" or a "stalker" of any kind.

Generally, the site will be updated about once a month, depending upon how much new material I cobble together.

I try to include as many details as possible about her roles, such as the size of her part in any movie, so potential viewers will be as well informed as possible.

I think, whether intentional or not, the fact that her face is not plastered all over magazine covers, tabloids, chat shows, etc. makes her rather unique in the entertainment industry -- sort of mysterious and special. This is one of the reasons she interests me, personally.

Though I am unpaid for any work on this site and am simply an enthusiast who actually cares about the content of this site, industry casting directors may find this site of interest as it generates positive publicity for her. It essentially performs some of the functions of a publicity agent -- at no real cost to anyone.

These facts should set this "fan page" ahead of any others or even an "official" site that may emerge.

Who are you?

I'm a mainframe systems analyst by profession. Click here if you really want to know more.

How did you become interested in her?

In October 1986, I saw "Easy Prey" on television (missed the first half hour actually). I didn't care for the subject matter, but I was impressed by her performance and thought she was nice looking too. In July 1987, I saw "Summer School" in a movie theatre and noticed her again. From there I started keeping notes [see Movies & Television sections] and collecting videos of her performances. My interest continued until early 1991 when I caught a rerun of "Bluegrass" and taped "Crime of Innocence" from TBS. Since she stopped getting acting roles in late 1990, I lost interest and forgot about her until late 1995 when I just happened to be channel surfing and caught her in a rerun of "The X Files" and a segment of a show called "Final Justice."

In August 1996, I searched the internet and didn't find anything about her. I always wondered if there were really any other folks out there who were interested or even knew who she was. In late 1997, I noticed Don Gough's site at ozemail.com.au and helped him with some information from my notes.

Which of her movies are your favorites?

I'm generally biased toward the late 1980's stuff, particularly...

Summer School (1987) [panache of the film as a whole, I have watched this film literally DOZENS of times and I never get tired of it]

I Saw What You Did (1988) [excellent starring role in a way above average TV movie, she's very nice looking in this one too!]

The Blob (1988) [another excellent starring role and her best line on screen: "Come on you can do better than that!" as she fires a rifle at the blob]

...and I generally dislike her roles [especially when she has just 1 scene in a movie] around 1997 when she had that white cropped hairstyle. But don't let my biases upset you...

The movie "Twice Upon a Time" (1998)  is often incorrectly referred to as "Two Cups of Joe" (1998) in some biographies and filmographies.

These individuals are not the Shawnee Smith this site is concerned with:

A "Shawnee Smith" is a lunch hour DJ on peak 95.1 FM in Denver, Colorado

A "Shawnee Smith" writes the Hot Product page for Billboard Online

A "Shawnee Smith" has written for Vibe Magazine

A "Shawnee Smith" is credited as "Imaging voice female" for radio station Fever 105 within the videogame "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" (2002). I have played the game many times [an understatement] and listened to the station and as far as I can tell her voice does not sound like "our" Shawnee.

Some Movie databases list Shawnee Smith as appearing in the following movies. She does not.
