Shawnee Smith Revealed

J. Tarshis

Don't be surprised if you're in a club and the lead singer looks surprisingly familiar. It might just be Shawnee Smith. The diminutive actress who plays Linda, Ted Danson's dingy assistant on CBS's "Becker," also has her own band and boy does she know how to rock. Her group, Fydolla Ho (Five Dollar Whore), is getting a lot of attention in the Hollywood club scene. Of course, with a lead singer that looks like Shawnee, that comes as no surprise. But there's more to her band than simply looks. Ho's music is hot and heavy, with a melodic punk edge and the band is reportedly moments away from a record deal.

As much as she loves acting, music is a "soulful and passionate release" for Shawnee. But the chasm between her careers is not as wide as it might seem. "The dynamic of the two are pretty similar," she says. "They move fast, there's rewrites every day, you're always fine tuning it, you've got to work off each other and you have a live audience when you're filming it. I love working on "Becker" and also love the sublime feeling I get from playing music. There's energy with collaboration that's a lot fun."

Though Shawnee is best known for her numerous TV roles, her film credits are quite extensive as well, including a role in Armageddon and the Academy Award-winning Leaving Las Vegas.

When she's not rocking out, Shawnee says she tries to get to bed at a reasonable time for her early morning acting calls.  And if we stumbled into her bedroom at night, how would we find her? If I go to sleep in something really hot, it never ends up on me by the time I wake up... if you know what I mean." Oh, we do, Shawnee, we do.
