"In the Spotlight: Shawnee Smith" by Malissa Thompson

It's been 10 years since Shawnee Smith had her first really big taste of acting. "I think they liked me for my buckteeth and freckles," she says about the McDonald's ad she made when she was 9.

Today, sans the buckteeth, Smith is sporting an impressive resume. While her feature-film roles include parts in Annie, Iron Eagle and Summer School, most will recognize her as the blond-streaked beauty who was hunted by an oozing gelatinous glob of slime in The Blob.

Smith admits her most recent project, costarring with John Candy in Who's Harry Crumb?, is a welcome change: "There I was locked up in this car all day with John, and my stomach hurt so bad because he had me laughing the entire time."

Smith is now searching for a more serious role, one she hopes will bring her closer to working with her idol, Meryl Streep. "She'll be around a long, long time." From the look of things, so will Smith.
